The HSE has calculated that in 2014/15 more than a million people were made ill by their work and the cost to the UK economy in 2013/14 was £14.3 billion.
At the end of October 2015 the HSE published some rather sobering figures. These identified that 27.3 million working days were lost due to work-related ill health or injury in 2014/15.
In the same period 142 people were killed and 611,000 injured in the workplace, 76,000 of which were reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).
The number of fatalities is slightly up on the 2013/14 figure of 136. In both years the highest rate of fatal injuries occurred in the construction and agriculture sectors.
When it comes to the number of people suffering from work-related illnesses, the figures are even higher. The HSE calculated that 1.2 million people who worked in the last year were suffering from a work-related illness. Plus, 800,000 former workers were suffering from illnesses that had been caused by their job.
It also found that there had been 2,538 mesothelioma deaths caused by exposure to hazardous asbestos fibres.
The HSE has put all the 2013/14 figures into complex calculations and identified that the collective cost to the UK economy was approximately £14.3 billion, with £9.4 billion from illness and £4.9 billion from injury.
Despite these numbers, it’s recognised that the UK is one of the safest countries in which to work. However, what’s also clear is that there are still improvements to be made. This, of course, is something that the HSE is on a mission to achieve.
The HSE has certainly been active in hitting those who haven’t met their legal obligations. In 2014/15 it issued 12,430 enforcement notices and prosecuted in 728 cases.

If you report an incident under RIDDOR, an inspector will probably make contact and likely to visit your site. If it’s a very serious incident, this likelihood is much greater. The inspector will look at all aspects of your operations, not just the cause of the incident. TEAM safety Services can help you put reactive measures in place after an accident to help prevent a reoccurrence but more importantly can help you to be proactive in preventing accidents in the first instance!!
